Eanie, Meanie, Minie, Moe.... Oh no!

So, the first year of school has gone great! I could do less with the "Mom do we have to school today", but all in all it has been such a growing journey for the both of us. I have literally been on cloud nine about it. That is until I got the dreaded question, " What curriculum are you using next year?" question. Its like that red siren immediately started going off it my head again. NO! I have to choose again? Folks. I'll be honest we enjoyed My Fathers World, but we have done the whole curriculum in about five months. It was a great intro to homeschooling, it gave him confidence. Shh... I'm not sure I would like to use it again for second grade. I adore the Charlotte Mason method.

I can't see our school without it, but there has to be other options right? I know, I know.. I could piece one together, but honestly ain't nobody got time for that. I work ten hours a week outside the home, while inside my home I'm building my business looking for people that want to do life with me, helping take care of aging grandparents, and starting a co-op this fall. Whoa, I just got dizzy thinking about it all. No fear, I have got God and  my little essential oil friend Stress Away has got my back.

So, this is where you come in. What curriculum do you like? What is challenging enough with out dragging your kid screaming and crying to the table to do school everyday? I want to hear from you!! All you super seasoned mom's or dad's. I'm so glad that my newbie glow is wearing off , but I'm far from that seasoned war vet that nothing, I mean nothing has them shaking in their boots.

Zoom...Where did the time go?

Hey guys! I can't believe how fast this year has zoomed by. We are almost done with school!! We have a month left. Hayden did not want to school till August ( can you blame him!?!) so we have been doubling up on our weeks with My Fathers World. I have also been busy being the master mind behind two new projects. One- I'm starting a Charlotte Mason based CO-OP this fall called Simply Living CM. So, if you are in the Chicago land area and would like more info on that please let me know.

Two- I've started a new business, Proverbs 27.9 Ministry. I will be sharing my love for essential oils <3 This ministry started because we found toxic mold in our home. We are in the process of remediation and trying to find a safe place to go. After much research these oils are one of the few things that will cross the blood/ brain barrier to help aid in getting us back to our normalness. Ha! Who am I kidding I was never normal. Seriously, if you are interested in more info on oils please email me at proverbs27.9ministry@gmail,com. I am using this to help support my families income as I am not able to work full-time because of my health.

Please  pray for my family. Thank you, Elizabeth.

My Father's World- Week Five

We have been plugging right along with phonics sh, ch, th, and ng! Monkey absolutely loves the student sheet mini books! We did a LOT of hands on math activities this week counting by 2's, guessing how many, sequencing and any lot of object to ten. We have been reading Little House in the Big Woods and continue to plug away.
This weeks science and next week is all about Trees. So, I combined the two!  We counted the rings on a tree stumps to see how old the tree was, we made a bark rubbing, and even searched out what kind of evergreen trees we seen based on their leaves. We went on a couple of nature hikes and I even worked the science lessons into Monkey's Cub Scout badge -Tigers in the wild!

My Father's World Week Four

This week we took it easy. I didn't push him to really do much at all. We had Bible time, Phonics, and quiet reading time .Monkey did all the Math pages the week before. We started a new read out loud book Little House In The Big Woods. That means lots of snuggles and hot cocoa.  I'll be honest we read about how a flower grows , but we didn't do the Science activity. Monkey does not like the Art book at all. This is a big bummer! I'm not pushing it with him at all. I'm in the process of trying to find something else. Any suggestions? I love that we can go at our own pace , keep what works and do away with what doesn't.

My Father's World- Week 3 ( Schooling the week of Christmas)

Sweet baby Jesus! Yes, folks we schooled the week of Christmas. I am that mean mom. ;)  This week we finished up writing the alphabet. Wahoo! We made a scroll, and introduced the short vowel sounds A,E, and I. We then worked on sorting objects, and making a dozen. We made fudge, and talked about how it is better to give than to receive. Then we made our annual blessing boxes filled with goodies for our neighbors.  It may seem like a lot, but it really wasn't.  Theses are the books we read this week : The m&m pattern book ( he loved it so much we used it for two weeks ;) ) and Madeline. With it being the week of Christmas I did add in some of our favorite Christmas books.

Helping dad make fudge! This count as Home Economics.... Right?

Sorting the yummy way with m&m's and Rolo's!

Our blessing boxes!

Spelling Word Program

We are going into week seven in MFW. Shhh.. my blog is a little behind ;) What was really bothering me is that there isn't a formal spelling lists with every week spelled out. Bah dum bump! OK, I have a cheesy sense of humor. With transitioning Monkey from Public School he is used to it, plus I want him to be a good speller. Practice makes perfect..right?  I was doing some research and came across this really awesome site www.k12reader.com. They Have a full 36 week spelling program for not only First Grade, but all the way to Fifth Grade.  Each week comes with five pages of activities. They also have a 36 week reading comprehension program that goes hand in hand with the spelling program. This is a simple. One page with half the page being a mini story and the other half questions. You guys, it's FREE!!  I couldn't keep this secret in much longer. Go on over and check it out or if your more of the type that likes a review before you use something stay tuned for my Week 6 post.

My Father's World Week Two

Another week is in the books! This week we worked on writing letters M-X.
We did a lot of hands on learning activities, and we started doing math  in The complete Book of Math. We also worked on patterns using The M&M's Color Pattern Book. ( Dino's love M&M's! )

We made a Jewish Calendar , and in Science talked about Plants and Soil. It's a toss up to say what was Monkey's favorite thing this week, but I think it might of been Science! He has started to call Friday's "Fun Friday".  I also made a work sheet to go with the Plant and Soil activity. If you are interested I can create a PDF copy. Just let me know.

This week Monkey read the Complete Adventures of Curious George to me. He is reading very well, but struggles with reading for long periods of time. So, he reads a paragraph then I will.
The books that I chose for read out louds this week are:
The Ant and the Grasshopper by Amy Lowery Poole.
Upstairs Mouse, Downstairs Mole by Wong Herbert Yee.
Are you an Ant? by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries.
